Robert John Wearden

On November 13th, 1879, the Dominion Line Steamship, St. Louis, left England on a journey to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Aboard this ship was a young man named Robert John Wearden, as well as twelve other Weardens. During this 26 day voyage, Robert John kept a journal documenting some of the details of their trip to America, including singing and dancing aboard the ship, rough weather, a visit to Corunna, Spain and a stop at Havana, Cuba. It is interesting to read his account of their emigration to the United States, especially due to the fact that most, if not all of Weardens in America are descendants of one of the thirteen Weardens on that ship.

Robert John had a successful and interesting life in America, working and raising a family in Texas. At age 71, he died in San Antonio, Texas and was buried in El Campo at the Garden of Memories Cemetery (formerly known as ODHS Cemetery). When I pass through El Campo, I like to stop at his gravesite and thank him for coming to America and starting a family so that I could enjoy the benefits of being an American.
